hand carved
from Soar
Wood by carvers
near Mas
in Bali.
Each Buddha
is painstakingly
carved by
skilled local
craftsmen,
usually the
older more
experienced
ones who
all tend
to work in
one street
and specialise
in particular
carvings,
animal, dragons,
buddhas,
etc.
Walking
from one
end to the
other you
can see the
carvings
in various
stages of
completion.
They tend
to start
out by roughly
chipping
away at what
is literally
a trunk of
wood before
moving onto
the fine
detail. Sometimes
you will
see a trunk
on one end
and an intricate
detailed
carving emerging
from the
other end.
Each piece
can take
from 2
- 3 weeks to
complete depending
in it's size
and intricacy.
