As you will all have no doubt heard in the new the city of Yogyakarta has been hit by a major earthquake. Our supplier Warjiyo (whose picture you can see in our brochure on page 64) lives in Bantul, south of Yogyakarta and was unfortunate enough to be at the epicentre of the earthquake. Fortunately he and his family are all safe but many of his villagers weren’t so lucky and lost their lives.

Warjiyo’s house, workshops and showroom have all been badly damaged. Many other people in the area have also lost their homes and livlihoods and as a result are living under makeshift tents.

Warjiyo himself is a resourceful man and has some savings, so although the earthquake is an absolute disaster for him, he will survive and rebuild. Says company partner Andy Mackonochie, “I personally am more worried about the many other people in the village who have little or no money and do not have the potential to rebuild their lives, we have visited the area many times over the years and have many friends there so would like to help out in any way we can”.

We are collecting money which we will distribute directly to these people. Batik Indah has setup a relief fund accound and has already made a contribution.
